streaming - What we loose?
Compressed music streams, only include contents
that compression system considers enough relevant.
Many important things to get a full musical
experience are considered not relevant, and in music, as
in other fields, real relevance sould not be established
only by his relative energy content.
If we would compress the human genetic information
considering what MPEG or WMA does with relevance, no human,
nor insect, nor Antediluvian organism could be obtained.
If we would compare the best and the worst
interpretation of a musical piece, we will find that differences
are “subtle” in energy, but big in cultural
meaning to the listeners.

Sound
resolution - Will you notice?
What is sound resolution?..., sound resolution
is the capacity to reproduce the little and the
big contents at the same time.
People and industry, makes believe that resolution
depends on the number of bits and/or the precision of any
of the elements in the the system, avoiding to consider
that no usual or even professional loudspeaker/transducer
is able to transduct more than around 45 dB of resolution.
Simply looking at the specs sheet of any loudspeaker,
we will notice that with one watt of power (the best),
and continuous signal (the easiest to reproduce), distortion
is down around 45 dB below, so any simultaneous signal
45 dB below will have a 100% distortion to fight with.
Effective acoustic plans should be included within this
range to be transductable, and conventional compression
can not arrange this without destroying acoustic plans
and musical attacks.

Intelligibility – The
essence of communication?
In human languajes, vocals (30 to 300 ms.)
are much longer than consonants (10 a 100 ms.), and consonants
are much weaker than vocals (up to 27 dB less).
As in any other senses, “sensorial masking” makes
worst this situation, and...
A 10% of the humanity has hearing diseases. The signal to noise environment is variable. The phonetic emission of each person is different. The ability of each listener to understand
is different. We try to compensate this with more attention,
but this is stressing and uncertain.
At last, we imagine the parts we did not understand
to give a meaning to the messaje, and is usual that we
invent a 25% or more.
The achieved real intelligibility is unknown.

Transitions
- The life of the music?
Attacks and transitory contents are the first
to be destroyed by information reduction algorithms and
system pass band limits.
Unfortunately, transitions are the main responsibles
of the execution character, and also the principal cause
of the differences among instruments.
Transitions are how the things happen, and
are the principal reason for compressed streams never having
the original impact and clarity.
